THE AFRIKAN FREEDOM STATION “Nun but our selves”

I KNOW NO OTHER AFRIKA BUT THIS ONE, I HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN JOHANNESBURG. MINE IS AN AWKWARD PERCH IN THE CITY, WITH NO PEACE OF LAND IN THE COUNTRY. MY ANCESTORS LIE BARRIED IN THE GHETTO GRAVEYARDS. IT IS THEIR IMAGE THAT I CREATE MY URBAN SELF.

THULA NDIVILE EXHIBITION IS A FRAMED MOMENT IN KWENA’S SEARCH FOR THE SPIRIT OF HIS GRANDFATHER JACOB MADUMO, A GHETTO-BORN SAXOPHONIST WITH THE LEGACY OF JAZZ MANIACS, WHO LEFT HIS CHILDREN IN THE SLUMS CALLED THULA NDIVILE (WESTERN NATIVE TOWNSHIP NEXT TO SOPHIATOWN)”
